SAL. OPPENHEIM CUP 2009 - Charity High Goal Polo Tournament in Support of the Children's Hospice Sterntalerhof

This year the Sal. Oppenheim Cup, Austria's biggest and most prestigious polo tournament, was staged for the eighth time in the grounds of Schlosspark Ebreichsdorf. In spite of the rather changeable weather giving way to persistent rain in the afternoon, 800 guests from business and industry, the fields of culture and diplomacy, enjoyed top class polo at Schloss Ebreichsdorf (High Goal, with team handicaps +12 to +14).

In all, four teams (Team Land Rover – Auto Stahl, Veuve Clicquot, Sterntalerhof, Sal. Oppenheim) battled for the coveted trophy. Team Sterntalerhof achieved place three ahead of Team Land Rover – Auto Stahl. In the Final, Team Veuve Clicquot under team captain Werner Graf gained Place 1, slightly ahead of Team Sal. Oppenheim under its team captain Walter Scherb. On top of the satisfaction of achieving Place 2, Walter Scherb was also awarded the title of 'Fairest Player', which he received at the hand of the Argentine Ambassador Eugenio Maria Curia.

CHARITY AUCTION IN SUPPORT OF STERNTALERHOF
This year the focus of the event was not only on polo but also on a good cause: Since it is especially charitable organisations that suffer most from a lack of sponsors and donations in consequence of the economic crisis, the bank decided to redesignate the Sal. Oppenheim Cup 2009 as a charity event and to donate all proceeds generated by an auction to Sterntalerhof, a children's hospice. Sterntalerhof is an independent charitable organization exclusively funded by private means. Sterntalerhof provides families who do not know how much longer they will be able to enjoy a tomorrow together with holistic care and support for a number of weeks, i.e., families with critically ill children or a critically ill parent, and also families after a bereavement.

The auction proved a great success: the guests not only outshone one another in matters of elegance but also at the charity auction in support of Sterntalerhof. As a result, Peter Kai (its founder) and Harald Jankovits (manager of Sterntalerhof) were delighted to receive a cheque for € 55.270, an impressive sum considering that € 2.000 covers a week's stay for a complete family at Sterntalerhof. Among the items that could be bid for were works of art by Staudacher, Prachensky and Rainer, a piece of jewellery by Tiffany as well as a variety of exclusive weekend breaks and events.

Prague

SAL. OPPENHEIM CUP 2009

At the end of May 2009, the Sal. Oppenheim Cup was staged for the third time at Farma Levin, near Prague. Polo is a quite young sport in the Czech Republic. Under the aegis of Dior, Jaeger LeCoultre, Kampa Group and Sal. Oppenheim it featured four international teams. In the course of this polo tournament, Sal. Oppenheim, its eponymous sponsor, hosted an exclusive hospitality event which, despite the bleak weather, was attended by 300 select guests from business and industry, politics, and the higher echelons of society; they all spent a pleasant afternoon together.

Warsaw and Budapest

Sal. Oppenheim’s continued expansion in Eastern Europe

As a next step of internationalising its business activities Sal. Oppenheim established further branch offices in Poland and Hungary. “We are very happy that we have also managed to find highly competent financial experts in these promising markets, with a thorough knowledge of the local market environment,” says Dr. Bernhard Ramsauer, Chief Executive of Sal. Oppenheim Austria. In Warsaw, the impressive opening exercises were decisively influenced by “An Evening at the Opera – Three Artistic Highlights”, specially orchestrated for Sal. Oppenheim. In the famous Warsaw Opera the audience was placed right on the largest opera stage in Europe and enjoyed – finding itself at the centre of events – a brilliant performance by the Kielce Dance Theatre and by the counter tenor Artur Stefanowicz.

In Budapest Sal. Oppenheim received her guests at the premises of the Hungarian National Museum. In the course of events, a chamber music ensemble of the Bavarian State Orchestra interpretated the Romanian Dances of Belá Bartok and a romantic suite of Edvard Grieg. An overwhelming highlight of the evening was the performance of the Hungarian soprano Erika Miklósa. As atmospheric final and farewell to the guests, tall flames – triggered by their movements – danced to the sound of Brahms’s ‘Hungarian Dance No 5’.

OPPENHEIM EXPERT, OPPENHEIM PRIVAT and OPPENHEIM AKTIV

OPPENHEIM EXPERT, OPPENHEIM PRIVAT and OPPENHEIM AKTIV are three themed cycles of special events and functions arranged specifically for Sal. Oppenheim’s clients.

OPPENHEIM EXPERT aims to inform our clients about the global political environment and about developments impacting on the capital markets. Among other speakers, Dr. Otto von Habsburg analysed current developments in the European Union one year after its expansion.
Another expert whose services we managed to secure was Dr. Hugo Portisch, who provided analytical insights into global politics.

OPPENHEIM PRIVAT, with its focus on social occasions, provides exclusive evenings for clients and friends of our house in a relaxed atmosphere. Most recently, our guests enjoyed a brilliant concert given by the two young virtuosos Lidia Baich (violin) and Richard Hyung-Ki Joo (piano). In 2004, Otto Schenk read anecdotes from his book Sachen zum Lachen (Things to Make You Smile).

The cycle OPPENHEIM AKTIV caters for clients from the field of asset management. Here, the emphasis is on specialist information (e.g., technical talks given by guest speakers) combined with a variety of outdoor activities. The last such outdoor event was a treasure hunt at St. Wolfgang under the motto: "James Bond – Casino Royal".
